As individuals living in Atlanta, we each experience the city differently. This exhibition focuses on the perspectives of four photographers, for whom Atlanta is both subject matter and content. The only artist not based in Atlanta, John Dowell visits major American cities, including Atlanta, to capture images of the glittering nocturnal landscapes created by the lights of their buildings and streets. Marilyn Suriani’s latest body of work also concentrates on nighttime scenes of Atlanta, but with a different focus. She searches for unnoticed areas that are in contrast to the glitzy commercial images that we often see.
Virginia Twinam Smith’s photographic series of the Little Five Points area was shot during the spring and summer of 1999 at a peak of the neighborhood’s colorful funkiness and creative energy. Paul Hagedorn has been chronicling many aspects of Atlanta. For this exhibition, he is presenting work which artistically documents the transformation of old Buckhead into a glamorous new commercial center for Atlanta.

The south is not commonly known as an epicenter for contemporary glass artists. Because of the intense heat and constant firing necessary to make glass, artists’ communities in cooler climates like the Pacific Northwest and New Englad have been focal points for the medium. Yet some of the most innovative and influential artists in the genre live here in the south. Internationally acclaimed artists such as Richard Jolley, Gary Beecham, John Littleton and Kate Vogel have long called the south their home. As well, a new generation of glass artists such as Kiara Pelissier, Thor Bueno, Alex Bernstein and Pablo Soto have chose the south as the best locale for exploring their talent.
The common thread between all the artists in this exhibition is the presence of The Penland School of Craft in North Carolina. Long considered one of the finest institutions for the study of a wide variety of craft disciplines, the school has been a constant source of inspiration and innovation to many of the artists in the region.
